My car has been towed, now what?

Did you come back to find out your car was not where you left it?  If you find your car has been towed it is probably due to your having parked illegally. In some cases you will not find signs that indicate this.  Or you may find that you accumulated a few unpaid tickets.

If there is no signs indicating the towing company look for a security guard.  If you are at a business, go in and ask them, they may have been the one that called or would be familiar with the towing company that tows from that area.

If you believe your vehicle has been stolen or has been towed from a City street, you should always call 911 to report or obtain information regarding the vehicle. The Hawaii police will be more than happy to help you figure out where your car is.

Be sure to have your driver license number, the make and model of the vehicle, and the name under which it was registered. Only by providing this kind of information will you be able to get the  name of the company that towed your car. If you find out you had unpaid tickets, you’ll need to take care of that first before go to get your car back from the impound lot.

Don’t wast time getting to the impound lot.   Be sure to check the hours because not all impound lots are open all day long;  many may not allow you to get your car out until specific times.  If at all possible, try to reclaim your towed car within twenty-four hours of when you learned it was impounded.

Be sure to stay calm and be respectful to the police and the towing companies.  Remember, they are just doing their jobs and they are more likely to help you if you are calm and easy to deal with.
